Sequel to Proposal
Steve and Tony didn't have a big dinner party to announce their engagement, and neither of them flaunted a diamond ring around to show it either, so when their friends received the invitations they were all extremely surprised. Pepper was the first to call, asking Tony if it was true and not a really stupid joke. She only truly believed it was happening when Steve confirmed it, and then Pepper screamed into the phone and Tony hung up. He'd call her later to apologize. Eventually.
They took their time to plan the wedding. Tony was a party man, but he completely agreed with Steve when he suggested a discrete ceremony. Peter was not such a big fan of that idea, but his parents scared him with horror stories of hours and hours posing for pictures and getting his cheeks pinched by creepy ladies who smell like socks until he was totally on board. The ceremony would take place on a Sunday afternoon, at Stark Tower, with close friends and the team as guests.
The rings Tony had made on the workshop, they had been wearing them on necklaces; Steve wearing Tony's and Tony wearing Steve's. They only removed them on the wedding day when they gave them both to Peter.
"Now, be careful with those." Steve says to him, kneeling down as he closes Peter's small hand over the rings. "Don't lose them."
"I won't." Peter beams and runs off to get dressed. Steve lets out a content sigh as he sees his son leave for his room and gets up. "Tony?"
"Yeah?" Tony comes out of the kitchen, still chewing the remains of his sandwich. He got hungry when he got nervous.
Steve smiled at him. "Are you okay?"
"What? Me? I'm fine. Awesome. Perfect. We're getting married today, of course I'm great."
"You're babbling. Why are you so nervous?"
"Steve." Tony whimpers and sighs. "Because... What if I mess up?"
"How could you mess up?" Steve frowns.
"I don't know, on the vows, maybe?"
"You won't." Steve chuckled. "Now, go get ready or you'll mess up by being late."
Tony's eyes widened and he nodded before quickly walking to the bathroom for a quick shower. Steve sighed happily and went to their room to get their clothes ready.
Tony was still freaking out by the time everyone started arriving, so while Steve was greeting the guests, Peter ran upstairs and knocked on their parents' room.
"Papa wants you to go downstairs." He said when he opened the door and peered inside.
Tony nodded but was still pacing back and forth. "Yeah, yeah, I'm- I'll be down there in a minute."
"Papa said you were nervous." Peter walked over to the bed and sat on it. "Why?"
"Because this is a big day." Tony sighs. "And I don't wanna ruin it for papa."
"But you're getting married, you can't ruin that. Papa's really happy." Suddenly the boy's eyes went wide. "You don't wanna marry him?"
"What? No! I mean, yes, of course I want to marry Steve!"
"Then how could you ruin it? Papa just wants to be with you."
Tony looked at his son as once again his childish innocence made Peter actually smarter than him. He smiled and took a deep breath, straightened his clothes on the mirror and walked over to Peter.
"You look very nice, young man." He refrained from ruffling Peter's hair, which had visibly been styled by Steve.
"You do, too." Peter smiled brightly and got up to tug on Tony's hand. "Come on, come on!"
"Right." Tony chuckled and followed Peter. "You got the rings?" Peter nodded and patted his blazer's pocket as they stepped down the stairs.
Steve smiled when he saw Tony and let out a relieved sigh at the way he was smiling easily at Peter. Beside him, Natasha was congratulation him on getting Tony to settle down but mainly on having the patience to put up with him. Steve smiled at her and thanked her, because what else was he supposed to do?
Soon every guest was in the house and the minister had everything at the ready. Tony took a last moment to admire everything; This was the big day. In their living room there was a small table, the minister sitting on a chair and reading over his speech. On the other side of the table, there were two chairs for the couple. Behind those, a few rows of more chairs where the guests were sitting, Peter in the front row next to Rhodey, carefully holding the rings in his hand. Tony looked at his side and Steve looked like his smile could tear his face in half, and that's when every last bit of nerves vanished.
"I love you." Tony whispered as he entwined his fingers with Steve's.
"I know." Steve beams down at him and gives him a quick kiss. "I love you too."
They walk up to the chairs designated for them and everyone falls silent. Tony winks at Peter one last time before sitting down, and through the ceremony his hand never leaves Steve's.
They manage to go through the vows without Tony making a single crack joke, which is more than anyone was expecting, and Peter delivered the rings on the right time without being told twice. Overall, the wedding was perfect. Until Tony pushed it at the kiss, wanting to suck on Steve's tongue and earning a face from Peter, a look from Pepper and blush from Steve. Worth it.
They all have dinner in the house as well, catered by the best in Manhattan and with a lot of variety, because Peter doesn't like fish but Natasha loves sushi and Thor just wants to eat all the meat his alien stomach can handle. There's even grilled cheese, which was mainly for Peter but Clint seemed to be very happy about it as well. There's a vegetarian selection because of Bruce, who is trying to get away from meat because rumor is, it makes you violent, but in the end he doesn't resist and eats some beef too. Pepper and Jane are both eating chicken, and Happy is sulking because Thor isn't leaving any lamb behind. Peter is eating spaghetti now, his favorite, but he's eyeing the chicken and the lamb and 'daddy, are those chips?!'. Steve is eating spaghetti as well, and Tony, well, Tony isn't eating anything more than some rice because he stuffed his face before the wedding and isn't hungry.
By the end of the evening, Clint is drunk, Thor is laughing at him, Tony is tipsy and Bruce is trying to keep his calm in the middle of the madness. He ends up joining Steve, who is playing a board game with Peter and Happy since Pepper wouldn't let him - in her own words - join the circus.
The guests start to leave at around 2am, by that time Peter has already passed out on the couch. Clint too, but for different reasons. Steve carries the boy upstairs and is removing Peter's shoes when he wakes up and rubs his eyes.
"You fell asleep." Steve says with a smile and takes the opportunity to help him change into pajamas. Peter huffs.
"You were all talking about boring, grown up stuff."
"I'm sorry." Steve chuckles. "Do you have everything packed?"
Peter nods. "When are you leaving?"
"Around 7am. You don't need to wake up if you don't want to, we can drop you off at Natasha and Clint's place and-"
"No." Peter interrupts. "I wanna say goodbye, I'll sleep after you're gone."
Steve nods as he finished dressing Peter and kisses his forehead. "Okay. We'll wake you up."
"Rhodes said you were up here." Tony whispers as he opens the door to Peter's room. "Oh. You woke up." He smiles and sits down next to the boy.
"How long will you be away?" Peter asks, rubbing his eyes.
"Just a week. Listen, Peter, Clint's gonna try to corrupt you, so whatever he tells you I want you to ask Natasha if it's true. If he tells you to so something, as permission from Natasha. Okay?"
Peter nods and yawns, so Tony gets up from his bed and lays him down under the covers, tucking him in before kissing him on the cheek and saying goodnight. Steve turns of the light and softly wishes him sweet dreams, and before he knows it, Peter's asleep again.
