Being the Captain of the team had it's perks, you might say, one of them being that whenever another member was on a 'one man mission', Steve would be the only one to get full details and would also be the first to receive any news on the mission. Which was what he was waiting for at the moment, alone, sitting on a room at SHIELD headquarters, nervous fingers tapping a rhythm on the table.

Steve never particularly liked Director Fury, but he never hated him. Well, not until that morning, when said Director told him about Tony's mission. It was dangerous, too dangerous and Steve argued that no one else on the Avengers team was busy at the moment, they could have assembled. Fury shook his head and explained that Stark was the man for the job. "We needed someone who could quickly understand and disable the enemy's machinery. Their technology is very advanced. We thought of getting Banner involved, but we needed someone who could leave the place fast." And that's all he said before he left the room.

Groaning, Steve got up and started angrily pacing back and forth. It made sense that they sent Tony, the man was brilliant and there was no doubt he was right for the job, but Steve didn't like the sound of 'leaving the place fast'. So, as Tony explained to him once, he plugged the usb drive that was in his pocket on the computer in front of him, and after a minute JARVIS came to live. Steve asked him to do a search through SHIELD's files, the ones referring to Tony's mission, and after a quick read he slammed his fist on the table. There was a high possibility Tony wouldn't be able to come back, the enemy's mechanism included a self-destruction procedure that would automatically activate at the sign of an intruder.

"Rogers, can you hear me?"

For a second Steve thought he was imagining Tony's voice in his head, until he looked back at the computer. 'Incoming Call - Tony Stark' flashed on the corner of the screen, along with a video feed. Steve clicked twice to enlarge the video and winced, the close up showing the large cut on Tony's forehead way too clearly, even if the video and sound weren't at the best quality.

"Yes. Yes, I can hear you, Stark. What's your position?"

"Yeah, cut that crap. I'm running out of power." Tony gulped and Steve could hear it clearly. The video feed blacked out from time to time, but the sound was stable. A little scratchy, but stable. "I just-- God, this is gonna sound so lame. I just wanted to, you know, say goodbye. To you."

"... Tony? Where are you?"

"I wasn't finished, you're being rude, you know?" Tony huffed out a pained chuckle.

"Tony!" Steve's voice was the same he used on the battlefield, except that it was stained. Almost muffled by the lump in his throat.

"I'm not getting out." Tony finally answered, eyes closed. "I can't. The SHIELD reports aren't updated, their system is more advanced. I'm locked up and the bastards drained almost all the power from my armor. There's not enough to escape and I'm wasting precious call time by explaining this to you."

"Tony, I'm coming to ge-"

"I love you."

The video feed was clear as Tony said it, and Steve could swear he could see a tear threatening to escape his eye. He didn't notice that his own cheeks were wet, and only when he spoke again and his voice came out rough and whiny did he acknowledge that he was crying. "I'm coming to get you."

"I don't think there's time." Tony said as if he had not just declared his love for Steve and wasn't facing death.

"Shut up!" Steve was already getting up from his chair to get his suit. "You think you can just call me to tell me you love me and then let yourself die? No." His voice was stern, even as he sniffled. "You are going to say that to my face and I'm going to say it back to you."

Tony was quiet for a moment and Steve was too busy changing into his Captain America gear to see the smile in the video feed. "Say it now. Just-- In case the worst happens, and--"

"The worst is not going to happen."

"Please."

"... I love you."

Tony hung up the call and was about to wipe away the tears when he remembered he was in armor. 'Power - 8%' flashed in red letters in front of his eyes and Tony sighed. "Well, I'm not about to just stand here and wait for death to come." He muttered to himself as he stretched out his arm. For better or for worse, he'd try to blast his way out of the steel room he was in.

It was for worse.

The blast didn't come. The door exploded a second later and so did everything around Tony. He crouched down to take cover, now officially out of power, and suddenly everything was black as he fell unconscious.

Noise. The only thing Tony could register was noise. And pain. His head was pounding and wouldn't dare to open his eyes, the light shining too brightly through his closed eyelids. He groaned and there was one voice that stood out, all the rest becoming static to his ears. He smiled, eyes still closed. "I love you."

"You're such an idiot." Steve's voice was tear stained. "Why didn't you call me sooner?"

"You said you were gonna say it back to me."

"I love you, you lucky dumbass."
:iconjashin-sister: : Tony gets in a fight which he can't win. He calls Steve and tells him he loves him (they're not together yet) Steve promises to rescue him and he love him too (I'll let you decide if he can save Tony or not)

... Sorry if the title was misleading.

I'M BACK.

I think.
